RR7501A FRANCE: UNCERTAIN FUTURE – PASTEUR INSTITUTE

(3 Jan 1975) The Pasteur Institute, France’s prestigious scientific foundation for medical research, is facing a cash crisis that may drive it out of Paris. The Institute’s buildings on a 50,000 square metre site in the centre of the capital have changed little since they were built over 80 years ago. Cramped and dilapidated, they cannot be modernised and are no longer suitable for modern medical research. The Institute makes its living from the production and sale of its vaccines, but despite the enormous potential here, it is still 2m in debt. Its director, Prof. Jacques Monod, has tried to introduce a more business-like approach and wants to sell the central Paris site to clear the Institute’s Arrears and give it a fresh start in modern surroundings at Garches, north of Paris. If the deal goes through, it will be the end of an era. Not only will the laboratories have to move, but also the tomb, study and museum of Louis Pasteur himself.
