7. SOUNDBITE (English) Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho, Albuquerque Foundation co-founder:
“So, the Foundation was born first and foremost to safeguard and exhibit the Albuquerque collection, which is a collection of Chinese porcelain mostly, gathered by my grandfather over 60 years. And the focus of the collection is ceramics exports done for the European markets between the 16th and 18th centuries. Of course, the collection has works much (more) ancient than that. The oldest work in the collection is from the 20th century before Christ and it goes up until the beginning of the 20th century, the last work in the collection.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho, Albuquerque Foundation co-founder:
“So, we come with the feeling that this is a family home, this is a known space, this is what you expect from a Quinta (farmhouse) in Sintra. But as you go in you already get welcomed by this feature of the architecture that sets the tone that this is not exactly what you were expecting, and we go from this being a family project to, of course, this is what it is in a family home, so people feel that they are welcome into this space, but at the same time, we have state-of-the-art installations. We have vitrines, everything that you expect from a high-class museum. And we have the best brains behind the scenes making this all happen.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Albuquerque Foundation’s director, Italian critic and curator:
“From my point of view, the historical significance of this collection comes both from the amazing quality of the pieces, which is widely recognised, and from the meaning of export porcelain nowadays, because I think these pieces, they entail a series of narratives of economic power, globalisation, colonisation, exploitation, even of an amazing army, we could say, of craftsman who were able to create incredible pieces. But its interest also comes from the fact that we see contamination of European, Oriental cultures and techniques.”

20. SOUNDBITE (English) Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Albuquerque Foundation’s director, Italian critic and curator:
“This exhibition gathers around 300 pieces of a total of more than 2,000 that the collection is made of. So, this is the first exhibition. For each exhibition we will call an external curator to bring a new vision of the collection. This first exhibition entitled ‘Connections’ is curated by Becky McGuire, a North American scholar, and it will last approximately one and a half years, and the idea is to rotate not just the exhibition of the contemporary programme, but also the exhibitions of the collection.”
