STORYLINE:
Catholic faithful in the Philippines held prayers on Friday for Pope Francis in an hour-long vigil at the Manila Cathedral.

Francis has spent a week in hospital after a case of bronchitis worsened. Doctors later diagnosed a complex respiratory infection, involving bacteria, virus and other organisms and the onset of pneumonia in both lungs on top of asthmatic bronchitis.

At Manila Cathedral a vigil was led by Manila Archbishop, Cardinal Jose Advincula, to pray for Francis’ speedy recovery.

"We raise our prayers to God for Pope Francis and for all the sick we will say, ‘Lord in your mercy hear our prayer’," Advincula said as he addressed the vigil.

Other Catholics in Asia’s largest Catholic nation were urged to pray in their homes and communities for the pope, who drew a record crowd of 6 million people when he celebrated Mass in a Manila park in 2015, according to official estimates at the time.

“Let us continue praying for the Pope, not only for him to recover, but also for him to be able to continue guiding the church,” said Monsignor Rolando Ramos Dela Cruz, a rector at Manila Cathedral.

The Vatican late Thursday reported a “slight improvement” in Francis’ overall clinical condition, with his heart working well.

But it will still take some time to understand if the various drug therapies are working, and outside doctors have said that regardless, recovery from pneumonia in such a fragile patient could take up to two weeks.

Francis has had two longer hospital stays during his nearly 12-year pontificate. He spent 10 days at Gemelli in 2021 when he had 33 centimetres (13 inches) of his colon removed.

In 2023, he was admitted for nine days for surgery to remove intestinal scar tissue and repair an abdominal hernia.
