"In terms of legal principles and interpretation, I believe it has been explained that the current detention is an illegal confinement and that the grounds for detention have ceased to exist. The prosecution’s view or argument, in my opinion, is merely an emphasis on how things have been handled in the past, rather than a special logical or legal argument. Therefore, if we approach this matter accurately from a legal and interpretive standpoint, I trust that the judge will make a wise decision."

STORYLINE:
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared in court Thursday for a hearing where his lawyers contested his arrest on a criminal charge alleging he was orchestrating a rebellion when he briefly imposed martial law in December.
Security was heightened as the motorcade transporting Yoon arrived at the Seoul Central District Court and dozens of his supporters rallied nearby.
The preliminary hearing ended in about 15 minutes as the court accepted the request from Yoon’s lawyers that they needed more time to prepare for the criminal trial and scheduled the next preliminary hearing for March 10.
Yoon Kab-keun, a lawyer for President Yoon, said "the current detention is an illegal confinement and that the grounds for detention have ceased to exist."
Following the preliminary hearing, the court also reviewed the request by Yoonโs lawyers to cancel his arrest and release him from custody. Such challenges are rarely successful. The court has not ruled on the request yet.
Yoon was indicted Jan. 26 on the rebellion charge carrying a potential punishment of death or life in prison. In South Korea, presidents have immunity from most criminal prosecutions, but not on charges of rebellion or treason.
