STORYLINE:
Heavy rains wreaked havoc across rural Peru on Thursday, triggering landslides and severe flooding.
In Nazca, the overflowing Aja River inundated rural areas, submerging farmland and destroying homes.
Bridges collapsed under the force of the water, leaving many residents stranded.
Firefighters in Nazca have been working to rescue those trapped by the rising floodwaters.
"There are five fallen adobe houses, and there are several that are about to fall," said firefighter José Ramírez, who was working in the area.
For days, many farmers resisted evacuating, fearing their homes would be looted.
But as the waters surged on Thursday, they were forced to take the risk, wading through the swollen river in a desperate bid for safety.
The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for 157 districts across multiple regions as relentless rains continue to batter the country in some areas for weeks.
