"We used to watch the images (of the destruction in the village), but we weren’t as affected as we are now. As soon as one arrives in the village, they would immediately shed a tear. We felt deeply saddened and heartbroken. The beautiful things, the memories, and the nostalgia for the village—all of it is gone. Its landmarks have completely changed. We now find ourselves searching for the entrance to our own home. Only simple things are still visible."

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mona Samra, Kfar Kila resident:
"One feels sorrow over the destruction, seeing the village and homes in ruins and belongings scattered—it’s heart-breaking. But God compensates for everything. However, if Sayyed (Hassan Nasrallah) had remained and everything else was lost, one wouldn’t be this saddened. Victory would have a deeper meaning if Sayyed were with us.

"I left from here because I was battling cancer and had a doctor’s appointment. I went to see the doctor, and then everything happened that night. A few days later, my husband followed me to Beirut, and we’ve been there ever since."

My husband grew up in this house, my children grew up to see the world in it. We love our country, we love our village and we love our home."

STORYLINE:
Lebanese families returning to the southern border village of Kfar Kila found their homes and entire blocks destroyed after Israeli troops withdrew from the area.

Israeli forces withdrew Tuesday from the south of Lebanon under a deadline spelled out in a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement that ended the latest Israel-Hezbollah war, but stayed in five strategic overlook locations inside Lebanon.

Top Lebanese leaders denounced the continued presence of the Israeli troops as an occupation and a violation of the deal, maintaining that Israel was required to make a full withdrawal by Tuesday.

Kfar Kila along the border with Israel witnessed intense fighting and later Israeli troops detonated many of its homes.

Upon their return, its residents were stunned by the scale of the destruction.

"As soon as one arrives in the village, they would immediately shed a tear. We felt deeply saddened and heartbroken. The beautiful things, the memories, and the nostalgia for the village—all of it is gone," said Mana Samra, who along with her kids returned to find their home in rubble.

"We now find ourselves searching for the entrance to our own home," she added.

Many villagers’ homes and businesses in southern Lebanon were demolished during the yearlong conflict between Israel and Hezbollah or in the two months after November’s ceasefire agreement when Israeli forces were still occupying the area.
