5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Amparo Alcala, pilgrim from Valencia, Spain:
“We are very happy to be here, but we are also sad for the pope’s sickness. We know he is a man of great faith, and strong, and brave. He is doing great things most of all for the women in the church and this gives us a lot of joy. We are praying for his recovery and that he might come back, if this is God’s will, as this is the most important thing.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Sister Charlene, nun from Singapore:
“Being a Wednesday, usually there should be the (Pope’s) audience, but unfortunately the pope is ill. I think many people are disappointed, but I think more importantly we really have to pray for his health. For me, he is doing many good things for the church and for the people. So even though we cannot encounter him directly, but I think to remain with him in prayer, that’s more important.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Junhee Christina Kim, pilgrim from Seoul, South Korea:
“Well we wanted to greet the pope in our traditional costumes, and the Lunar New Year was very recent so we also wanted to bow traditionally and formally in front of him. But you know, it was too good of a chance to pass up so we came anyway, so that we can be in the Vatican in our traditional costumes.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis slept well, got out of bed and ate breakfast on Wednesday, the Vatican said, after tests confirmed the 88-year-old pontiff had developed pneumonia in both lungs.

Francis was admitted to hospital in a “fair” condition on Friday after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened.

His usual weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday was cancelled, but pilgrims still gathered to wish him well.

“We know he is a man of great faith, and strong, and brave,” said 78-year-old Amparo Alcala, who travelled from Spain with a group of about 200 pilgrims to see the pope.

In an early update Wednesday morning, the Vatican said Francis spent his fifth night in Rome’s Gemelli hospital peacefully.

Tests on Tuesday confirmed pneumonia in both lungs and that the pope’s respiratory infection also involves asthmatic bronchitis, which requires the use of cortisone antibiotic treatment.

“Even though we cannot encounter him directly, I think to remain with him in prayer, that’s more important,” said Sister Charlene, a nun visiting the Vatican City from Singapore.
