"We’re dealing with a chronic and inhumane water crisis here in Rocinha. People are making do with the public showers we installed in certain parts of the community, areas that are lucky enough to still get water; to cook, bathe their children, and care for bedridden elderly. In reality, we’re just surviving the chaos."

STORYLINE:
Residents of Brazil’s largest favela are using a public square shower to cool off due to ongoing water shortages in the community that have been exacerbated by a heatwave.

Rocinha, located in Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone, faces constant water supply issues, especially in higher areas where water pressure is insufficient.

The combination of water scarcity and record temperatures has put residents in an extremely vulnerable situation, with limited ways to cool down and minimal hygiene conditions, increasing health risks.

On Monday, Rio de Janeiro recorded its hottest day in at least a decade, reaching 44°C (111°F)—the highest temperature since the city implemented its climate alert system over 10 years ago.

The second-highest was 43.8°C in November 2023.

City officials issued an alert for extreme heat for the coming days, set up hydration stations and prepared the public health system to handle an increase in heat-related cases.
