STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday welcomed talks between senior officials from Russia and the US on improving ties and negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.
Delegations led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met at the Diriyah Palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
“We are glad to see all efforts that are conducive to peace,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun commented on the meeting at a daily news briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.
“We also hope that all stakeholders and parties involved will participate in the peace process at an appropriate time,” he added when asked about China’s view on Ukraine’s exclusion from the talks.
The meeting marks another pivotal step by the Trump administration to reverse US policy on isolating Russia and is meant to pave the way for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump earlier this month upended US policy toward Ukraine and Russia by saying he and Putin had agreed to begin negotiations on ending the war.
Ukrainian officials aren’t taking part in the meeting, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that his country won’t accept the outcome if Kyiv doesn’t take part.
Guo also called on parties concerned to “play a constructive role in accumulating conditions” for a final settlement when asked about a proposed agreement to give the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he has directed his ministers not to sign off on the proposal because the document was too focused on US interests.
