Background to Story: The Islamic Revolution in Iran, and the anti-Communist fight
by Moslem rebels in Afghanistan, have drawn attention to the situation of the 40
million Moslems across the border in Soviet Central Asia. Many Moslems have been
fighting as troops of the Red Army in Afghanistan.Nobody expects Islam to present
an internal threat to the Soviet Union, but its general Islamic revival could make
the Soviet Moslems more aware of their separate identity and to distance themselves
in various ways from control from Moscow.
