4. SOUNDBITE (English) Katharine Arnold, Vice-Chairman, 20th/21st Century Art, Christie’s:
"This is Portrait of Man with Glasses III by Francis Bacon. It was painted in 1963. It’s one of four pictures that the artist made with this subject. It’s a man, we don’t know who. But always with Francis Bacon, it’s a little bit of all of the influences in his life at that time. It’s a little bit himself. You see this huge quiff of hair, which is so Francis Bacon at that period in the 1960s. It’s a little bit David Sylvester. It’s a little bit Picasso. It’s a little bit Battleship Potemkin."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Katharine Arnold, Vice-Chairman, 20th/21st Century Art, Christie’s:
"You have all of these different frames of reference in this picture. And at the same time, what makes this special is you see these extraordinary pearly white teeth. It is a motif that Bacon really cared about. He talked grandly about wanting to paint the mouth like Monet painted a sunset. And here you really see him tackling that head on."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Katharine Arnold, Vice-Chairman, 20th/21st Century Art, Christie’s:
"The estimate on this painting is 6 to £9 million. It’s the first time it comes to auction. It’s been in private hands throughout its life, so it’s a bit of a rediscovery. It was most recently shown at the National Portrait Gallery here in London in that portraiture exhibition, and it was also the front cover of this wonderful show at the Ashmolean called ‘Henry Moore and Francis Bacon, Flesh and Bone’. So it’s an iconic painting, we’re so excited to bring it to the market for the first time. The market for Bacon has been incredibly strong, particularly for fresh to market high quality pictures."

LEADIN:

A Francis Bacon painting is expected to sell for up to £9 million when it goes up for auction next month.

The portrait was completed at a pivotal moment in the artist’s life, both professionally and personally.

STORYLINE:

This painting is getting the white glove treatment – and with good reason.

The artwork has a price tag in the millions.

The distinctive style is classic Francis Bacon.

It was painted in 1963, a time when his professional star was on the rise.

By the end of the year the artist would stage a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, his first major institutional exhibition on the East Coast.

Personally, Bacon was still grieving the death of his long-term partner Peter Lacey. But three months after finishing this work, he met George Dyer, the other great love of his life.

The portrait is hanging on the walls of Christie’s auction house in London.

But it will soon be going under the hammer.

Katharine Arnold, who is Vice-Chairman of 20th/21st Century Art at Christie’s, says Bacon took inspiration from many sources.

"This is Portrait of Man with Glasses III by Francis Bacon. It was painted in 1963. It’s one of four pictures that the artist made with this subject. It’s a man, we don’t know who,” she says.
