STORYLINE:
Drone footage has captured the widespread devastation in northern Gaza after 500 days of war.
The aerial images taken in Jabaliya show entire areas of flattened buildings, rubble and tents as people walk among the destruction.
Monday marks 500 days since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel.
The two sides have maintained a tenuous ceasefire for nearly a month.
At its height, the fighting displaced 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million.
But as the ceasefire took hold, hundreds of thousands have returned to their homes.
Many have found only rubble, buried human remains and unexploded ordnance.
The war has killed over 48,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters.
Israel says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
The Oct. 7 attack killed about 1,200 people and about 250 were kidnapped, with more than 70 of them remaining in captivity in Gaza.
The truce is set to expire in early March and it is unclear if they will extend it, launch talks aimed at ending the war altogether or simply resume fighting.
