Living in the tunnels of Las Vegas | DW News

Las Vegas, a city synonymous with glamour and excitement, conceals a stark reality beneath its vibrant surface. In the shadowy storm drains that weave through the city, around 12,000 people grapple with untreated mental illness, addiction, and homelessness. Rob, a former resident of these tunnels, navigated their damp confines for five years, learning the hidden paths of survival. With the help of "Shine a Light," an organization dedicated to uplifting those living underground, he now seeks to guide others toward a brighter future.
Freedom, a 47-year-old woman living in the tunnels, shares her struggles with schizophrenia and the haunting memories of trauma. Despite the darkness, her spirit shines through, revealing moments of beauty in her art and reflections on life. Yet, the harsh reality of drug use and danger looms large, with stories of overdoses and floods echoing through the tunnels. Jay, another long-term resident, recounts the fear of flooding and the loss of belongings, while also speaking of the ghosts that haunt the space. Amidst the chaos, "Shine a Light" offers hope, providing counseling and resources for those ready to re-enter society. The outreach manager, Robert, emphasizes the importance of empathy and connection in their mission. As they work to humanize the experience of homelessness, the stark contrast between life above and below the surface becomes undeniable. In this hidden world, resilience and creativity coexist, challenging our perceptions of success and survival. DW’s Washington Bureau Chief Ines Pohl met Rob, Freedom, and Jay in the tunnels to share their stories.
