STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Hezbollah supporters gathered near Beirut’s airport on Saturday, blocking a road as a U.N. peacekeeping convoy attempted to reach it.
The demonstrators were protesting Lebanon’s decision to revoke permission for an Iranian carrier to land in Beirut.
Lebanon banned the Iranian flight after Israel claimed Iran was smuggling cash to Hezbollah.
Lebanon’s civil aviation agency cited “additional security measures,” rescheduling some flights until February 18—the deadline for Israel and Hezbollah’s ceasefire implementation, including a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
Demonstrators carried Hezbollah and Lebanese flags and chanted slogans against the U.S. and Israel.
When the participants attempted to block the road, preventing a U.N. peacekeeper convoy from passing towards the airport, security forces responded with tear gas.
A similar protest on Friday saw a U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy attacked, wounding several peacekeepers on the same airport road.
