STORYLINE:
Thousands of activists demonstrated in Berlin on Friday, hoping to raise awareness of climate issues ahead of Germany’s upcoming general elections.
Holding a large banner reading, “Right on a future, instead of a right (wing) future,” protesters marched near parliament, demanding climate change be put back on the political agenda and urging citizens to vote.
The demonstration was organised by the youth-led movement Fridays for Future.
The far-right Alternative for Germany party appears to be heading for its strongest national election result yet this month.
Polls have put AfD in second place ahead of a national election on February 23 with about 20% support.
