STORYLINE:
The remains of 14 South African peacekeepers killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been repatriated to the country on Thursday at the Air Force Base Swartkop in Pretoria.

The soldiers died last month during a fight between the DRC army and M23 rebels while deployed on a peacekeeping mission.

The soldiers’ coffins were draped in South African flags and were carried by members of the Air Force during the ceremony before being handed over to grieving families.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa told grieving relatives at the ceremony, "we as South Africans regard them as heroes of our nation. Their work in the DRC was not just about maintaining order. It was about building bridges, building peace, fostering understanding and creating pathways for lasting peace in our region and in our continent."
