3. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeremy Powers, Florida resident:
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. Canada has been one of our better, one of our best trade partners and just closest relations country wise. And having that as their own independent nation needs to be maintained, I feel. You know, we don’t need to try and manifest destiny and gather more land. We need to partner and work with other countries in a more friendly manner.”
4. Canadiana and American flags on bridge

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Shannon Robinson, Canadian resident:
“I think it’s very bold. I think it’s offensive. I think it’s ignorant. But I mean, he can say what he wants and it’s actually bringing Canadians together right now.”

“It’s pretty much like you telling them you own their property and they’ve been there all their lives, you know, so. And it’s kind of harsh in my book.”
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Joseph Sullivan, Louisiana resident:
“It seemed like it should be another way around that to keep the chaos down, you know, because all he’s doing is creating chaos and making other countries want to hate America. That’s all he’s doing right now.”

“It’s it is very weird. Instead of trying to grow relations with the countries around us, especially those directly connected to us, to basically almost kind of hint at threatening to take and bring in things that are not wanting to be. So, yeah, not for it.”

STORYLINE:
Spanning the border of Ontario, Canada and New York state is Niagara Falls, the oldest state park in the history of the United States.
The cascading beauty of the falls brings in droves of visitors from around the world every year.
Rainbow Bridge, a 24-hour border crossing, connects the U.S. to Canada.
While both countries share the natural wonder, President Donald Trump in recent weeks has repeatedly said he would like to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.
The proposal by Trump was not warmly received this week by visitors braving the winter cold to take in the sights of Niagara Falls.
Jeremy Powers, a visitor from Florida, said he doesn’t think it’s a good idea to make Canada the 51st state.
“Canada has been one of our better, one of our best trade partners and just closest relations country wise. And having that as their own independent nation needs to be maintained, I feel. You know, we don’t need to try and manifest destiny and gather more land. We need to partner and work with other countries in a more friendly manner,” Powers said.
Shannon Robinson, a Canadian resident who made her way to the U.S. side of the falls, said she thinks Trump’s idea is “bold” and “offensive.”
“I think it’s ignorant. But I mean. He can say what he wants and it’s actually bringing Canadians together right now,” Robinson said.
