“Continued cooperation with (the) US administration is an important topic of our discussions. There is no better guarantee for the security of our continent than close transatlantic cooperation. But Europe should do more and more for its own defence, both for the sake of the alliance and our own sakes.”

“What is at stake is not only the territorial integrity of Ukraine, or the security of the European continent, it is also the future of international law because abandoning Ukraine would mean definitely entrenching the law of the strongest, it would be an invitation to all the world’s tyrants and despots to invade their neighbors with complete impunity.”

STORYLINE:
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski outlined the importance of cooperation with the U.S. on helping to defend Europe but stressed countries in Europe need to do "more and more" to improve their own defence.

"There is no better guarantee for the security of our continent than close transatlantic cooperation," Sikorski said.

"But Europe should do more and more for its own defence, both for the sake of the alliance and our own sakes.”

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said NATO was still the main guarantee of security for Europe.

Abandoning Ukraine would “entrench the law of the strongest. It would be an invitation to all the world’s tyrants and despots to invade their neighbors with complete impunity,” Barrot said.

Sikorski and Barrot spoke following a meeting on the war in Ukraine between European foreign ministers in Paris ahead of the Munich Security Conference this weekend.

That’s after U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth insisted that NATO should play no role in policing a peace in Ukraine. And he said any peacekeeping troops should not be covered by the part of NATO’s founding treaty that obliges all allies to help defend any member under attack.
