STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people, both Taiwanese and visitors, celebrated the Lantern Festival in New Taipei City’s Pingxi District by releasing hundreds of sky lanterns of all colours that lit up the dark sky despite the continuous spring rain.

The colourful lanterns used to signify safety after bandits raided remote villages in northern Taiwan centuries ago. Now, they are an event captured by many social media users that draws thousands of visitors from around the world to a mountainous district north of the capital Taipei.

Tourists and local families lined up in the rain to light up wish lanterns on Wednesday at Taiwan’s largest event celebrating the Lantern Festival – a holiday that marks the end of the Lunar New Year period and which is celebrated annually on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar.

Some visitors came from as far as Europe to witness in person the iconic images of paper lanterns filling the night sky.

For Charlotte Cadinot, an exchange student from France, the fascination with wish lanterns started when she watched the Disney movie Tangled, which features a scene where the princess and her beau wish upon lanterns floating above a lake.

Cadinot and her boyfriend, Remi Delmas, recreated that scene to an extent when they wrote their own common wish as couple on a lantern before releasing it into the sky.

“We wanted just to see the magic of the lanterns in the skies. That is maybe a great thing to see. We wanted to see this from a year ago, so… that’s a great event today", said Cadinot.
