Central Gaza Strip – 12 February 2025
1. Various of destruction, people walking near rubble
2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Manar Hamo, resident of Bureij camp:
"The policy of displacement – some of us go to Egypt, some to Jordan, some to Kuwait, and others, I don’t even know where— we will not leave. We will remain here, staying above the rubble, stones and iron. We will remain in our homeland, in Gaza. Even if he (US President Donald Trump) offers us the whole world, it is not possible. We will remain sitting at the doors of our homes."
3. Various of tents
4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ziad Abu Shamala, resident of Nuseirat camp:
"There is nothing left for a person to cry about. Whether the war resumes or not, it doesn’t matter much. We spent almost a year and a half in the war and got used to it. It no longer makes any difference if the war resumes. In the end, as you can see, there are no tents, no caravans, no cement, no food supplies, no fuel — there is nothing. What’s the benefit of stopping the war only for it to start again? There will be no real difference."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Akram Abdullah, displaced from Beit Hanoun:
"I have fears that the war will start again, so I am staying here (instead of returning to the north) until we see what will happen because of Trump. About the displacement (from Gaza), we are steadfast. We die here and do not leave. We will not respond to Trump or anyone else."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians in Gaza have sent a defiant message to U.S. President Donald Trump over his proposal to depopulate the coastal enclave, insisting they would remain "above the rubble".

Trump doubled down this week on his vows to empty Gaza permanently of its more than 2 million Palestinians, saying they would not be allowed to return and suggesting at one point he might force Egypt and Jordan to take them in by threatening to cut off U.S. aid.

Whether it’s serious, a negotiating tactic or a distraction, Palestinians have roundly rejected the idea of leaving.

Manar Hamo, who lives in Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, called Trump’s proposal a “policy of displacement.”

“We will not leave. We will remain here, staying above the rubble, stones and iron,” he said.

"We will remain in our homeland, in Gaza. Even if he offers us the whole world, it is not possible."

Akram Abdullah, from Gaza’s northern town of Beit Hanoun, brushed Trump’s threats aside, saying: “We die here and do not leave.”

Ziad Abu Shamala, a father living in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, said he didn’t care about threats by Israel and Trump that fighting will resume.

Two of his children were killed in the war, and his house was destroyed, but he insisted that he won’t leave the strip.

"There is nothing left for a person to cry about. Whether the war resumes or not, it doesn’t matter much," he said.
