Muhsin Hendricks, considered the ‘world’s first openly gay imam’, was shot dead in an ambush in South Africa. Hendricks had been running an inclusive mosque in Cape Town and was known for challenging traditional interpretations of Islam. A human rights activist remembers him in an interview: "When you would go to the mosque, you find Christians in the mosque, you find Muslims. You find people who don’t belong to any community, but he was teaching them faith[…] The passing of Imam Muhsin in particular is a tragedy first, to human rights."
