STORYLINE:
The average price per dozen eggs nationwide hit $4.15 in December 2024.
That is not quite as high as the $4.82 record set two years ago, but the Agriculture Department predicts egg prices are going to soar another 20% this year.
Local bakers are starting to feel the financial burden now that Mardi Gras season is here and king cakes are in high demand.
Norma’s Sweets Bakery is a Latin market in New Orleans known for their Cuban sandwiches and king cakes stuffed with guava and cream cheese.
Co-owner and manager Jose Castillo and says what they pay for eggs has nearly quadrupled since last year.
"Normally we’ll get them for 35, 40 dollars a case and now we’re paying like 118, 120 dollars certain places."
They’d like to keep all of their products affordable but Castillo says that may not be possible with the current cost of eggs.
"Hopefully it’s just a temporary problem", he says.
