"Canadian steel and aluminum is used in a number of key American industries, whether it’s defense, shipbuilding, manufacturing, energy, automotive. Together we make North America more competitive. We will be working with the American administration over the coming weeks to highlight the negative impacts on Americans and Canadians of these unacceptable tariffs. But we’ll also be working with our international partners and friends, and if it comes to that, our response, of course, will be firm and clear. We will stand up for Canadian workers. We will stand up for Canadian industries, and more Canadians will stand up for each other. This is a moment of pride. This is a moment of pulling together. This is a moment for Canada to be solid in our identity, in our sovereignty and in our presence for our friends and neighbors."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Justin Trudeau, Canada Prime Minister on whether he would reciprocate with matching dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. aluminum & steel imports:
"As usual, we hope that it will not come to that. We will work with the American administration and highlight that imports of Canadian steel and aluminum create thousands, if not millions of jobs and support families across the United States. We have been doing things together in an extraordinarily integrated way for many, many years and we will look to continue to work with our closest ally and partner. We should be doing more together, not fighting with each other, but Canadians will stand up strongly and firmly if we need to."

STORYLINE:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canada and the U.S. "should be doing more together, not fighting with each other" as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes ahead with tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Speaking on the sidelines of an AI summit in Paris, Trudeau said he hoped the country does not have to resort to reciprocating with matching dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. aluminum and steel imports, adding that "Canadians will stand up strongly and firmly if we need to."

Trump on Monday removed the exceptions and exemptions from his 2018 tariffs on steel, meaning that all steel imports will be taxed at a minimum of 25%. Trump also hiked his 2018 aluminum tariffs to 25% from 10%.

The moves are part of an aggressive push by the president to reset global trade, with Trump saying that tax hikes on the people and companies buying foreign-made products will ultimately strengthen domestic manufacturing.

But the tariffs would hit allies as the four biggest sources of steel imports are Canada, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

"We will be working with the American administration over the coming weeks to highlight the negative impacts on Americans and Canadians of these unacceptable tariffs," said Trudeau.
