"We are people who have been uprooted by both wars and droughts and have been relying on USAID support. Now we have heard that the US has withdrawn this funding that had been provided to us. We are so worried for our families, please they need to reverse this decision."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Abdiqani Sheikh Omar, founder of the Somali Young Doctors Association (SOYDA) and former Director General of the Ministry of Health, Federal Government of Somalia:
"The announcement of the US president to suspend the USAID humanitarian assistance is very, very shocking news. It was very immediate and unplanned for many countries, including Somalia. The current situation of Somalia particularly for 2025 more than 6.9 million (people) are very in dire need. Among 6.7 (million) of them are in need of emergency health care assistance, 4.8 million of them, they require nutritional assistance, 2.5 million children require access to education, and 6.6 million people require access to water, which is very, very basic and essential life saving."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Abdiqani Sheikh Omar, founder of the Somali Young Doctors Association (SOYDA) and former Director General of the Ministry of Health, Federal Government of Somalia:
"For this year, USAID was going to provide Somalia one 125 million US dollars to support economic reforms, to support education, to support health sector, to support nutrition, to support food security, to support fishing, the fishers and to support the peace building process and as well as governance to create the district councils. I think all of this now has become null and void and that money is not going to come to Somalia, which will have a negative impact on Somali development and Somali recovery process.”

STORYLINE:
In desolate makeshift camps on the fringes of Somalia’s capital, tens of thousands of internally displaced people sit under the baking sun, unsure if they will have access to food rations and medication.

This uncertainty follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decree to freeze most of his country’s foreign aid.

The U.S. provides more foreign aid globally than any other country, budgeting about $60 billion in 2023, or about 1% of the U.S. budget.

Somalia depends almost entirely on foreign aid to look after the millions displaced by armed conflict.

The fund freeze has also caused major concern among those who need urgent medical care, including people who with HIV, as it disrupted the work of almost all NGOs in Somalia.

The United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, spent $369 million in Somalia in 2021, supporting everything from sanitation programs to emergency nutrition with funds channeled through government and non-governmental groups.
