STORYLINE:
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol arrived at the Constitutional Court Tuesday to attend another session of the ongoing impeachment trial that will determine his political fate.
A blue prison van carrying Yoon escorted by security guard vehicles arrived at the court about an hour before the hearing opened.
The court plans to call in key members of Yoon’s cabinet including Lee Sang-min, former Interior Minister and Shin Won-Shik, head of the National Security Office, as witnesses to testify in the court.
The Constitutional Court has been deliberating on whether to formally dismiss Yoon or reinstate him over his brief imposition of martial law on December 3.
The court must rule on the case within 180 days after it received it.
If removed, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days.
Yoon is set to face a separate criminal trial later this month as prosecutors indicted him on charges of rebellion in connection with his martial law decree.
