STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were concerned on Tuesday about the return of war after Hamas’s threat to delay the next planned release of Israeli hostages and U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to cancel the ceasefire.
The ceasefire, which took effect on Jan. 19, paused 15 months of Israel-Hamas war and allowed the release of about two dozen hostages held by militants in Gaza in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
It also allowed the delivery of hundreds of aid trucks to the enclave every day, as well as the return of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to what remains of their homes in the territory’s north after fleeing in the war’s earliest weeks.
Yusuf Lafi, a resident of Gaza City, said people have been suffering three weeks after the ceasefire especially in northern Gaza, but he urged for the pause to hold up.
“We hope that the war will not return again,” he said. “Until now the suffering continues in the north in particular and in the Gaza Strip in general.”
