(19 Jun 2003) British football star David Beckham said on Thursday that his transfer to Spanish club Real Madrid from Manchester United was "a good decision now."
Beckham had been reported as saying he felt like he was being traded as a commodity by the Manchester club.
But he told a news conference in Tokyo that his playing for a powerful team like Real Madrid was "a dream."
Beckham’s comments in in Japan were his first since his transfer was announced.
He admitted that the transfer saga surrounding his move Manchester United had not been ideal, saying there were things that could have been done differently.
Beckham also said he had consulted England Manager Sven Goran Eriksson on the move in order to ensure that playing for Real Madrid would not jeopardise his position as England captain.
Madrid, the nine-time European Champions Cup winner, already have international players Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Raul Gonzalez and Roberto Carlos on contract before it acquired Beckham, the England captain and Manchester United midfielder, for 41.35 (m) million dollars.
Beckham will receive an estimated annual salary of 7.08 (m) million dollars plus bonuses. The deal is expected to be finalised in July.
The football player is in Japan with his wife Victoria, a former pop singer, on a promotional tour of the Far East.
