"The bad part is that there were many candidates who did not even reach 1% (of votes). Then the two opponents, one of them will be the President of the Republic, they are people, people of money, let’s say. Who will never see for Ecuador, for the poor people."

"You have to have your own criteria, know how to recognise the country, how it was and how it is advancing now. Especially in the area of insecurity. The energy problem is going to be solved because our current president, Daniel Noboa, in the few months he has been here, he is doing good, he is doing good for the country."

STORYLINE:
Some residents of Quito on Monday weighed in on a presidential runoff election between conservative incumbent Daniel Noboa and leftist lawyer Luisa González.

Neither of the frontrunners secured the outright 50% majority of the votes to clinch a decisive victory.

Both Noboa and González were well ahead of the other 14 candidates and each within a percentage point of garnering 44% of the vote, according to results Monday.

The run-off election set for April 13 will be a repeat of the October 2023 snap election that earned Noboa a 16-month presidency.

The elections took place with a backdrop of violence and instability in the country. The homicide rate did drop during Noboa’s tenue, but remains well above levels seen in 2019.

For some Ecuadorians like street seller Luis San Lucas, Noboa’s tactics are working.

"Our president, Daniel Noboa, in the few months that he has been here, he is doing well, he is doing good for the country," he said.
