STORYLINE:
Thailand’s Prime Minister on Monday enlisted international star power to aid the country’s economy, in the shape of supermodel Naomi Campbell.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra welcomed the British catwalk legend to Bangkok’s Government House to discuss ways to help develop Thailand’s fashion industry.
The meeting included members of her so-called Soft Power committee.
According to a press release issued afterwards, Campbell said she is ready to support efforts to elevate the skills of Thais in the industry, by sharing her knowledge and expertise.
Paetongtarn has spearheaded a drive to promote Thailand’s “soft power” – its ability to exert influence in the world through aspects of its culture.
Its clothing and fashion industries are among the key pillars of the strategy.
A National Soft Power Development Sub Committee reported last December that there is an urgent need to boost the public awareness of local brands in order to help the industry realise its full economic potential abroad, according to Thai media reports.
Naomi Campbell is currently engaged in legal action in the UK to try to overturn a five-year ban on running a charity.
It was imposed after the anti-poverty charity she founded in 2005 was deemed to have been “poorly governed” with “inadequate financial management.”
The 54-year-old supermodel has claimed she was deceived by a fellow trustee and knew nothing of the way “Fashion for Relief” was run.
