STORYLINE:
Lawyers have begun to deliver opening statements at the trial of the man charged with trying to fatally stab author Salman Rushdie in front of a lecture audience in western New York.
Rushdie is expected to testify during the trial of Hadi Matar.
Rushdie had been about to speak at the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater in August 2022 when he was attacked on stage and stabbed more than a dozen times.
Matar is a 27-year-old from Fairview, New Jersey. He has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault.
Opening statements are scheduled for Monday in Chautauqua County.
