"Three of our members are suspended, and we wanted to create more collaborative and constructive engagement with the law enforcement agency and one of the activities of the USAID programmes through the freedom house was this one. So right now, we had three projects even at our organisation which are already suspended and we are going to lay off a few staff. Not much actually, totally we are 18, but few of our staff who were supported by these programmes. But very importantly, it would affect our strategic plan."

"This is people’s money and it is for the people so like it is how the American people want to support other communities globally as part of the global brotherhood, and it is not the derogative power of the executive. It is people’s will where they want to support people across the globe who are affected by conflict, who are affected by climate change, who are affected by diseases and whatsoever. So, my wish is this decision would be reversed very soon."

"All these life-saving engagements of the civil societies will be disrupted, and imagine how many people would be continuing to suffer. So it would be really a very tough message for us, for Africa."

STORYLINE:
US President Donald Trump’s global aid freeze continues to cause shockwaves across the African continent, and Ethiopian human rights organisations are sounding the alarm.
Masud Gebeyehu Reta, the Executive Director of the Ethiopian Human Rights Organisations and a member of the Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations, says hundreds of civil society and humanitarian organisations would be forced to close their life-saving work as a result.
Last week, the Ethiopian Ministry of Health announced that it was terminating the employment of more than 5,000 contracted health workers following the Trump administration’s 90-day freeze on financial aid.
In a sharp rejoinder, Reta said that Trump should not interfere with the American people’s generosity towards their fellow humans in need.
"This is people’s money and it is for the people so it is how the American people want to support other communities globally as part of the global brotherhood, and it is not the derogative power of the executive. It is people’s will where they want to support people across the globe who are affected by conflict, who are affected by climate change, who are affected by diseases and whatsoever," he said.
The United States is by far the world’s largest source of foreign assistance, although several European countries allocate a much bigger share of their budgets to aid.
USAID funds projects in some 120 countries aimed at fighting epidemics, educating children, providing clean water and supporting other areas of development.
