What is certain is that the new American administration has a different world view to ours. One that has no regard for established rules, established partnerships and trust. We cannot change that. We have to accept that and we have to deal with it. But I am convinced that it is not in the interests of the international community for this world view to become the sole dominant paradigm. A lack of rules must not become the model for reorganizing the world, ladies and gentlemen.
I tell you frankly, as a democrat, I am concerned, very concerned, when a small entrepreneurial elite has the power, the means and the will to redefine a significant part of the rules of liberal democracy. And I am even more concerned when some of these elite make no secret of their contempt for the institutions and norms of our democracy. That worries me.
