"Today, very early in the morning, we woke up due to strong odours in the air. At 5:30 am, we had a special and hazardous waste incinerator throwing its pollutants into the air: smoke and grey gases. That smell woke us up. When I looked out the window during the day, we looked at the river and it was red, but totally red. It looked like a river of blood, because, I mean, we have never seen it in those conditions."

STORYLINE:
A river on the outskirts of Buenos Aires turned red on Thursday, causing alarm among locals.
The Sarandí River, which flows through a mix of industrial areas and impoverished neighbourhoods, runs into the Rio de la Plata.
Along its path are several industrial buildings, including hazardous waste incinerators, which dot the landscape.
Local resident Maria Ducomls, 52, said she woke up at 5:30 in the morning because of a terrible smell from a column of smoke from one of the incinerators.
"When I looked out the window during the day… it was red, but totally red. It looked like a river of blood,” she said.
Authorities have taken samples from the river to conduct tests and determine the source of the contamination.
