STORYLINE:
The Qassam Brigades in the Gaza Strip held a funeral Friday for the deputy leader of Hamas’ armed wing Marwan Issa, who was killed by an Israeli airstrike in March last year.
Associated Footage footage showed large crowds of Palestinians and armed al-Qassam fighters gathered in the Bureij Refugee Camp, some carrying Issa’s green casket that was draped in the Palestinian flag.
Inside a building where his family members gathered, emotions ran high as Issa’s wife, daughter, and sister praised him as fighter and leader.
"If the Israelis think we’ve been defeated after my father and every leader have been killed, on the contrary, our determination only grows stronger," said Issa’s daughter, who did not want to be identified by her name.
At the scene, fighters set their rifles aside and stood in a row to perform Friday and funeral prayers.
Meanwhile, his wife, overcome with grief, told the AP that Issa’s death, along with other Hamas leaders, would not weaken the group, and that "all his children and his army, al-Qassam, which he founded will stay on his path."
She too did not want to be identified by her name.
Issa, born in 1965, was the deputy to Mohammed Deif, the shadowy longtime leader of Hamas’ military wing, who was also killed by Israel last year.
