STORYLINE:
A third unsolved shooting in Brussels within three days left one person dead and heightened tension in the Belgian capital where drug gangs have held ever bigger sway in some neighborhoods over the past months.
Shots were fired overnight in the Peterbos area in the Brussels suburbs of Anderlecht ,
On Wednesday at dusk two men with assault rifles shot what the police called "intimidation shots" up in the air and on the ground near the Clemenceau metro station, also in Anderlecht, There were no injuries,
The Peterbos area is known for being a hot place for drug traffickers.
"I’ve never felt safe in this neighbourhood. I still go out but I am always worried. But I tell to myself that this is where I live, and if something happens well so be it" said a 23 local resident who has always lived here.
She did not want to be named or to have her face filmed.
"I am hoping for a change, that the (drugs) traffic would stop in the streets, and I wish for better security because I have the feeling that nothing is implemented on that front" she said, explaining that she heard noises and thought it was firecrackers before realising that it was gunshots.
Belgium and the major cities of Brussels and Antwerp are routinely the scene of such shootings.
The port in Antwerp has increasingly been the center of European imports of cocaine and security officials had warned for years already that it was bound to trickle to other cities in Belgium.
Antwerp itself has been hit by grenade explosions for years. They are invariably linked to gangland fighting.
It was still unclear who the victims of this shooting were, but it happened in a neighborhood where drug dealing is rife and violence common.
