"Let’s see, the percentage has been a constant in the last elections because there is a crisis of political institutions in general. People do not believe in the old politicians, in the old political organizations, in fact, they are very suspicious about the transparency of the vote based on what the National Electoral Council has been doing and they are looking for new people, new proposals, young people."

8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gustavo Isch, Ecuadorian political consultant:
"It is in the interest of Noboa and Luisa Gonzalez that the election is defined in the first round. I think that after the electoral debate, Luisa Gonzalez’s candidacy is weaker than Noboa’s, and there is a possibility that Noboa will win in the first round, if things continue in the way they have been."

"I don’t know who we are going to vote for this time. Besides the number of ambitious presidential candidates to power, what do they have inside, with what ambition? knowing how the country is as it is economically, what is their salvation and their secret, what is it?"

13. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Adriana Guapulema, student:
"There is a lot of misinformation, the proposals are not clear, there are a lot of candidates. I would think that we should reduce the number of people who are running for president and that there should be more information."

STORYLINE:
Ecuadorians will head to the polls this weekend to elect a president for the second time in 16 months with the South American country still seeking to arrest a spike in violence in recent years.
Voters are set to decide if incumbent President Daniel Noboa deserves more time in office or if a new leader is required to address the issue.
Sunday’s ballot features 16 candidates, including Noboa and leftist lawyer Luisa González, whom he defeated in the runoff of a snap election triggered by the decision of then-President Guillermo Lasso to dissolve the National Assembly and shorten his own mandate as a result.
Noboa and González, a mentee of former President Rafael Correa, are the frontrunners.
To win outright Sunday, a candidate needs 50% of the vote or at least 40% with a 10-point lead over the closest opponent.
If needed, a runoff election would take place on April 13.
Political consultant Gustavo Isch said it was possible Noboa could win in the first round.
The violence which began in Ecuador four years ago is tied to the trafficking of cocaine produced in neighboring Colombia and Peru.
Kidnappings increased from 1,643 cases in 2023 to 1,761 through November 2024.
