In Austria, coalition talks lead by the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) have collapsed, deepening the country’s political deadlock.
The FPÖ was attempting to form a government with the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), but the two parties couldn’t reach an agreement on how to share ministries.
FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl has called for fresh elections to be held, but that option wasn’t immediately taken by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen.
The president instead said that he would consult with Austria’s political parties in the coming days on the paths forward.
According to opinion polls, the FPÖ would likely emerge even stronger following a new election. The party founded by former Nazis in the 1950s won the most votes in September’s general elections.
The FPÖ campaigned on building ‘Fortress Austria,’ proposing stricter migration rules, blocking asylum seekers from later obtaining citizenship, and increasing deportations. It also urged the lifting of the EU’s sanctions imposed on Russia due to its war on Ukraine.
