2. SOUNDBITE (English) Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of the released hostage Romi Gonen:
“It’s much easier to get up in the morning since I know my daughter is here. Still, there is a huge cloud above our head because there are still 79 hostages still held by Hamas. And since now I know some, a little bit of what they are going through, I know to say even more urgently that we must take them out, the ones that are still alive, that are suffering, and also the bodies of those who were murdered.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of the released hostage Romi Gonen:
“She is sharing very little of what she’s been going through and most of the things that she’s sharing, she’s, you know, telling us in a humorous way because this is Romi and she’s lighting things up a little bit. But I can tell you that when she came back, she was, her skin was grey because she didn’t see sun at all, almost at all, all those months she was in there held by Hamas. They were starved and some of the time when they didn’t, when the terrorists didn’t have food, they also didn’t have food. But sometimes, a lot of the time terrorists had food, and they hid it from the girls, so they didn’t receive food, not enough food. She lost ten kilos, which is approximately five pounds.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of the released hostage Romi Gonen:
“The conditions are just horrible. No shower. Maybe every now and then, maybe to wash themselves with a cup full of water, something like that. It’s something we cannot even imagine because we have, you know, we get up in the morning, we go to the shower, we brush our teeth, we have running water. It’s not like that for them.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of the released hostage Romi Gonen:
“Now what we are trying to do is work on the recovery because she will need a very complicated and long surgery and then a very complicated and long physiotherapy therapy because her hand is disabled now. For the all these months she was disabled. And one of the results of the shooting when the terrorist shot on the car she was in.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Meirav Leshem Gonen, mother of the released hostage Romi Gonen:
“I understood that (US) President (Donald) Trump (will) continue reassuring his commitment to the agreement and he committed, he renewed maybe, his commitment to the first phase to be finished and starting with the second phase, as he promised, as he was saying, and I really want to thank him for that because I can have my daughter because President Trump was a part of it, together with (the) Prime Minister of Israel.”

STORYLINE:
For the last two and a-half weeks, Meirav Leshem Gonen has been able to wake up in the morning knowing that her daughter is safe after 15 months of captivity in Gaza.
Her daughter, Romi Gonen, was among the first hostages to be released from Gaza in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as part of the recent ceasefire agreement – a long and uncertain process aimed at eventually ending the Israel-Hamas war.
After 15 months of devastating war sparked by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, Hamas and Israel agreed to a ceasefire deal last month.
Another three hostages are expected to be released on Saturday.
