STORYLINE:
A small group of protesters gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Istanbul on Thursday night under snowfall to denounce U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments on a proposal for an American takeover of Gaza.
Around 25 demonstrators stood in front of police barricades, chanting slogans in support of Palestinians and holding up signs depicting Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Goknur Bogucu, a small business owner, was among those leading the chants.
"We are against this in the name of humanity," she said, referring to Trump’s Gaza plans.
In a joint Washington news conference with Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump said he envisioned the U.S. taking control of the Gaza Strip, having its people relocate to other places and rebuilding the war-battered coastal enclave into the "Riviera of the Middle East."
The proposal sparked outrage in the Middle East, including in Egypt and Jordan, two close U.S. allies at peace with Israel that Trump has suggested take in the Palestinians.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, called Trump’s plan “remarkable” and the “first good idea” that he had heard.
