"The one-year-to-go is a milestone, but as every organizing committee knows, the last lap is always one of the most difficult ones because then it’s about many details. Then the concerns are being raised by different people, and then you have to stay concentrated, you have to have confidence in what you are doing, and we have this confidence because we can see here a great unity among all stakeholders."

STORYLINE:
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach on Thursday officiated the one-year countdown to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, saying Italy is ready.
Bach was in Milan to mark exactly one year before the Feb. 6, 2026 opening ceremony at the San Siro stadium takes place.
“Italy is ready to write the next chapter of its great Olympic history,” he said during a ceremony.
He then proceeded to symbolically sign invitations to international athletes, handing them out to representatives of the national Olympic Committees of all the participating countries.
"The one-year-to-go is a milestone but as every organizing committee knows the last lap is always one of the most difficult ones,” Bach said, addressing concerns about some venues in Italy running late on preparations.
That includes the century-old sliding center, which is being completely rebuilt for the 2026 Winter Games.
The track in Cortina is still a half-completed construction site.
With the deadline pushed tight, the IOC has requested an alternative venue that would require moving bobsled, luge and skeleton events to Lake Placid, New York, if the track in Italy isn’t finished on time.
The IOC has set a deadline for the end of next month for pre-certification of the Cortina track.
Alpine skiing will be divided between Cortina for the women’s event, and Bormio for the men’s.
