“There’s a bit of fear. With earthquakes there’s a bit of fear. They’re saying a lot about the caldera. Don’t go to the caldera. A lot of talk. If something is going to happen, it can happen there (gestures to the right). It can happen in (the villages of) Oia or Imerovigli where everything is hanging (off the cliff). Danger is everywhere. The main thing is not to have too much anxiety. Not to have fear. That’s what we’re saying.”

14. SOUNDBITE (Greek) Panagiotis Hatzigeorgiou, local resident:
“From here on out, we wait. If there’s going to be a bigger earthquake and then there are aftershocks and things calm down, we can’t know that. No matter what machinery you put, if it’s meant to happen, it will happen. That’s it. Now I’m hearing about three volcanoes. I knew of two. All these years I only knew of two.”

STORYLINE:
Greek islands surrounding an active earthquake zone expanded precautionary measures Tuesday, as experts assessed risks for the coming weeks while a handful of hardy tourists enjoyed having Santorini’s stunning views to themselves.

Schools across the Cycladic island chain were closed.

Nine additional islands announced measures as undersea earthquakes up to magnitude 5 continued to jolt the region.

Thousands of residents and seasonal workers have left Santorini after hundreds of quakes were recorded in the volcanic region since Friday.

Ferry and commercial flight operators added services to accommodate departures.

In Fira, Santorini’s main town, the narrow, whitewashed streets along the island’s clifftops were deserted – a rare sight even in the off-season – except for small pockets of tour groups, many from Asian countries.

Retired police officer and ship worker Panagiotis Hatzigerorgiou, who has lived on Santorini for more than 30 years, said he has turned down offers to stay with relatives in Athens.

In Athens, government officials continued Tuesday to hold daily high-level planning and assessment meetings with briefings from island officials.

The number of islands with precautionary school closures increased from four to 13.

Santorini also implemented additional emergency measures, canceling public events, restricting access, and banning construction work in certain areas.
