STORYLINE:
Crowds packed a soon-to-be closed
theatre in Hong Kong Monday night to watch a traditional Cantonese opera featuring a non-traditional star – Donald Trump.
The Cantonese opera performance titled “Trump on Show” was first performed in 2019.
Its latest version “Trump, The Twins President” has new scenes to show the latest developments in Trump’s return to the presidency, including the assassination attempt where his ear was injured.
A Hong Kong opera actor Lung Koon-tin wearing a blond wig plays Trump.
Another opera actor Roger Chan plays former US Vice-president Kamala Harris wearing her iconic blazer with pearl necklaces.
Traditional Cantonese opera styles are grafted on to modern foreign personalities to make fun of the American presidency with Trump in again.
The show had its final night at the Sunbeam Theatre in Hong Kong island’s bustling North Point district. It was sold out.
Hong Kong resident Yvonne Fok comes to see the show with her friend and hope to spend a fun night.
“I think this is funny because it brings together different unrelated elements like time travelling, China and US.”
Mainland Chinese university student Ethan Wu finds it special to be able to see the show.
“I think Cantonese opera and Donald Trump are completely different things and it’s difficult to put them together. I feel it’s very special to see this show.”
The three-hour comedic opera is bringing a lot of laughter to the audience, there are lots of clippings during the show.
The Sunbeam Theatre has been a venue for Cantonese opera for more than 50 years, but it’s due to close in March .
It’s iconic neon light signs will soon be taken down, and an historic place for Cantonese culture will be closed.
Cantonese is the mother tongue of Hong Kong people and it uses traditional Chinese traditional characters for writing.
