4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Jamie Raskin, (D) Maryland:
“They don’t have the right to be discipling people for political reasons and they don’t have a right to usurp Congress’s rightful role to appropriate money. We’ve appropriated money for USAID to render service around the world for fighting disease and fighting corruption and defending democracy. We know Elon Musk is not interested in that, Donald Trump is not interested in that, but that’s what the American Congress has done and we’re going to stand up for the workers here.”

STORYLINE:
Staffers of the U.S. Agency for International Development have been instructed to stay out of its Washington headquarters, and yellow police tape and officers have blocked the lobby.

This comes after billionaire Elon Musk announced President Donald Trump had agreed with him to shut USAID.

Agency staffers say they tracked 600 employees who reported being locked out of the agency’s computer systems overnight.

Democratic members of the US House and Senate met outside the USAID headquarters in Northwest Washington on Monday to pledge their support for USAID, and then tried to enter the USAID offices of the federal building.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, (D) Maryland, says that DOGE does not have the right to discipline people for political reasons.

“They don’t have the right to be discipling people for political reasons and they don’t have a right to usurp Congress’s rightful role to appropriate money. We’ve appropriated money for USAID to render service around the world for fighting disease and fighting corruption in defending democracy. We know Elon Musk is not interested in that, Donald Trump is not interested in that, but that’s what the American Congress has done and we’re going to stand up for the workers here," Raskin said.
