2. SOUNDBITE (English) Tyler Evans, resident from Smithton, Pennsylvania:
“I think, yeah, initially it might not work out so well but if we get our energy secured and if we get our energy down, I think it will be alright. It will be OK. Initially, right now, you know, Canada and Mexico, the tariffs on them are basically so that they can help us out with some of the fentanyl and some of the problems that are coming through. But I don’t think the tariffs will be too bad.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Samantha Evans, resident from Smithton, Pennsylvania:
“Let’s give it a go. And we will see. We still have four years to give it a shot. And what, the next four years, if they said no, that’s garbage, then get rid of it.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicolas Karayakaylar, visitor from New York State:
“I don’t have much of an economic background so I can’t really speak intelligently about it. But I know that we have a lot of trade with the countries named, especially China. And obviously Mexico and Canada are our neighbors so I have to imagine there are decent amount of trade there. Tariffs will inevitably be passed on to the consumers I don’t that what’s anyone voted for necessarily.”

STORYLINE:
Shoppers at a supermarket in rural town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania reacted on Sunday to a move by U.S. President Donald Trump a day earlier to impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China — America’s three biggest trading partners.

His tariffs against Canada and Mexico in order to stop illegal immigration and the illicit fentanyl trade have led to retaliatory taxes by both countries on U.S. imports.

He’s placed an additional 10% tariff on imports from China. He’s done so without congressional approval and by his own acknowledgement at the chance of “some pain” in the form of higher inflation, job losses and worse growth for Americans.

Tyler Evans and Samantha Evans, a couple from Smithton, Pennsylvania said they believe that there will be initial difficulties that Americans would experience, but added that it could help solving problems American facing in the long run.

“Let’s give it a go,” said Samantha Evans.

Nicolas Karayakaylar nodded his head in disapproval when he was asked about the tariffs.

“Tariffs will inevitably be passed on to the consumers I don’t that what’s anyone voted for necessarily,” said Karayakaylar.
