Kyiv – 1 February 2025
1. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with Ukraine News Director Susie Blann (R) and Ukraine correspondent Samya Kullab (L) of The Associated Press
2. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
(Responding to question about reports of likely talks between Presidents Trump and Putin and whether he would see this as a betrayal, and whether it would strain Ukraine-US relations)
"Putin can make the whole world feel that they have lost, and it will be a reality. Because he can have Ukraine not defeated, but he can beat the whole world. Show that he was right. In what way? Impunity. To show that compromises were found with him. It will mean that anyone can act like this. And it will be a signal to other leaders of the big countries who think about it. They think about what Putin did to Ukraine, they think about something similar, but they have not yet been able to decide. They didn’t have the courage to do it. And I think it’s very dangerous. I think if there are direct talks between America and Russia about Ukraine without Ukraine, it is very dangerous."

4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
(Responding to question about what direct talks Zelenskyy or members of his team had with US President Donald Trump or the administration since the inauguration?)
"We had several contacts, on the level of his special envoy… (special US envoy Keith) Kellogg, (Trump’s pick for national security adviser, Michael) Waltz, and the vice president also had contact with my chief adviser, the head of the office. There are some contacts. They were also very good, but still, it was all about general things. More detailed agreements may be between me and President Trump. I think this is very important. We need to work more on this. I understand that he is now focused on domestic issues. He promised it to his voters. This is his personal right. And I understand all of this. The time for the international agenda will come."

6. SOUNDBITE: (Ukrainian) Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine:
(Responding to a question about how he believes the choreography of talks on peace should happen)
"I would do it this way, and I would do what he (Trump) and I talked about. I believe that, first and foremost, we (must) hold a meeting with him (Trump) and that is important. And that is, by the way, something that everyone in Europe wants. Everyone wants that we had a common vision of a quick end to the war. And I would like us to be able to hear Europe, its voice is very important to us. They help us, and we are future members of the European Union. And the war is being waged on the European continent and that is also important. I believe that after our conversation with Trump, we should move on to some kind of format of conversation with Russians. And I would like to see the United States of America, Ukraine and the Russians at the negotiating table, because they are fighting against us. And, to be honest, a European Union voice should also be there. I think it would be fair, effective, but how will it turn out – I don’t know."
