STORYLINE:
Thousands of people gathered in Sao Paulo on Saturday to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Snake at an open-air event filled with Chinese music, food, dance, and martial arts performances.
The festivities took place in the Liberdade neighborhood, home to a large community of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean immigrants in Sao Paulo. This city has the largest population of the 300,000 Chinese and their descendants who have chosen Brazil as their home.
Over the years, the festival has become a beloved tradition among Brazilians as well, celebrating its 20th consecutive edition at the same location.
The event opened with the traditional dragon and lion dance parade, followed by stage performances featuring Tai Chi Chuan, Kung Fu, and traditional Chinese music and dance.
Throughout the festivities, attendees had the chance to experience authentic Chinese cuisine and even try their hand at Mandarin calligraphy.
This marks the year 4723 in the Chinese calendar, with the snake—one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac—symbolizing wisdom and transformation.
The Chinese New Year welcomes the arrival of spring and launches two weeks of festivities in China and Chinese communities worldwide.
