RR7248 SOUTH VIETNAM: THE FUTURE AFTER THE WAR

(3 Dec 1972) RR7248 SOUTH VIETNAM: THE FUTURE AFTER THE WAR

As negotiations on the final form of a cease-fire in
Vietnam continue between Washington and Hanoi,
President Thieu’s government in Saigon is maintaining
its opposition to any agreement that will allow North
Vietnamese troops to remain in South Vietnam or will
let Communists into any part of the South’s government.
The war has grossly distorted the economy and had a
profound effect on the country’s social and cultural life.
But it has also created new industries and
communications networks which could be of real
benefit in peacetime. In this report, we assess the
political and economic future and talk to Mr Tran Van
Do, a former foreign minister who represented South
Vietnam at the 1954 Geneva Conference.
