West Germany’s elections, due on November 19th 1972, will be a close contest between Chancellor Willy Brandt’s Socialists, who have had their coalition majority eroded over the last three years, and the opposition Christian Democratic Union under its new leader, Rainer Barzel. The CDU is backed by the Bavarian CSU of Franz-Josef Strauss. Much depends on how the coalition’s junior partners, the Free Democrats, fare at the polls.
