STORYLINE:
Ukrainian soldiers, family and mourners gathered in Kyiv on Thursday to pay tribute to a Polish volunteer soldier killed fighting against Russian forces.
An open casket, outdoor service was held in Kyiv’s Independence Square for Filip Antosiak, a 19-year-old member of the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was killed near Myrnohrad, Pokrovsky district on Jan. 19.
Fellow soldiers carried the coffin to St. Michael’s Golden Domed Monastery in Kyiv for the funeral, attended by dozens of family, friends and soldiers who came to say their last goodbyes.
Filip Antosiak’s mother, Angelika Kuza, said she was "so proud" of her son.
"He always wanted to be a soldier and he came here to help people," she said.
Marcin Antosiak, father of Filip Antosiak, said he loved his fellow soldiers and the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv.
"When we ask him, do you want to come home for a visit? He say, always, no I (don’t) have time, I have to stay here because they need me," he said.
Another fellow soldier, Olga, praised Antosiak, calling him "a good person."
Another four people were killed and nine were injured, including a child, following a Russian strike on Wednesday night which hit a residential building in Ukraine’s Sumy region, officials said.
