1. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Tim Walz, (D) Minnesota:
“Donald Trump’s reckless action, cut off funding to law enforcement, farmers, schools, child care, veterans and health care. While he was out golfing, he threw the country into crisis. This is not bold. It’s not leadership. It’s stupid, buffoonish, childish. It’s exactly what they did. Child care providers across the state, law enforcement, our prisons. Things that we count on. Individuals on Medicare. Things that we know matter to people’s lives.”

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Tim Walz, (D) Minnesota:
“I understand that people voted and Kamala Harris and I lost an election to Donald Trump. 77 million people voted for him. That’s 23% of the population. That is not a mandate to squash the Constitution. It’s not a mandate to break the law. It’s not a mandate to throw out all of the things that we know make this country work well. I will work with this administration where we work with them and where they’re lawful, and it’s in the interest. But this is not one of those.”

STORYLINE:
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz harshly slammed President Donald Trump for the federal funding freeze, while Attorney General Keith Ellison said he would be joining with other Democratic attorneys general in suing for an injunction to block the president’s action.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the administration freeze on grants and loans that could total trillions of dollars. The administrative stay pauses the freeze until Monday.

Walz, who was the Kamala Harris’ running mate in the 2024 election, said Trump did not get a mandate for such draconian action.

“I understand that the people voted and, Kamala Harris and I lost an election to Donald Trump. Seventy-seven million people voted for him. That’s 23% of the population. That is not a mandate to squash the Constitution. It’s not a mandate to break the law. It’s not a mandate to throw out all of the things that we know make this country work well."

“I will work with this administration, where we work with them and where they’re lawful and it’s in the (public) interest,” the governor said. “But this is not one of those. This is not one of those places. This is an illegal power grab meant to hurt the public while he golfs.”

Walz said the GOP-controlled Congress is abdicating its responsibility for deciding how to appropriate funds. State officials say the freeze puts nearly $2 billion per month for police, health and childcare programs in limbo.

“Donald Trump’s reckless action cut off funding to law enforcement, farmers, school, child care, veterans and health care,” Walz said. “While he was out golfing, he threw the country into crisis. This is not bold. It’s not leadership. It’s stupid, buffoonish, childish.”
